"I am looking for a dog that will live with a family and be steady with children. Can you tell me about the dogs you work with and how you decide what a dog is suited for?"

1. "May I see the dog in person, more than once?"
2. "What is the dog like around kids, strangers and other pets?"
3. "Who trained it, and what exactly has it learned?"
4. "What health records can you show me?"
5. "What does the contract promise, and what if it does not work out?"
6. "What help will my family get after the dog is home?"

Patience, specific answers and honest limits are good signs. Pressure, vagueness and big claims are not.
