Home readiness checklist for a family protection dog

A weekend of preparation prevents months of trouble.

Physical setup

  • Check the fence and latch every gate.
  • Pick a quiet corner for a crate or bed.
  • Install baby gates for rooms the dog should not enter.
  • Move shoes, medications and cleaning products out of reach.

Paperwork

  • Written approval from your landlord or association.
  • A call to your insurance agent.
  • Local licensing information.
  • A contract copy from the seller.

Household roles

Decide who walks the dog, who feeds it and who handles lessons. Put it on the fridge. Dogs thrive on routine, and so do tired parents.

The week before

  1. Buy a crate, bowls, a sturdy leash and chews.
  2. Choose a vet and book a first visit.
  3. Talk to children about the rules.
  4. Plan time off.

A quiet spot to lie down is the first thing a new dog needs.
